Shark, swordfi sh, elephant, hippopotamus, crocodile,
sting-ray and perch are used, as well as other materials.
Even Russian reindeer, but not just any one: a Russian
reindeer dating from 1786, whose hide was recovered from
a sailing ship which sank off the coast of Plymouth and was
preserved using tanning methods of the period. For customers who prefer classic materials, there is also suede
(British) or calfskin (from France where the hides are better
due to the farming methods on the other side of the Alps). There is also a choice of over 40 basic styles, each of which comes in three, four or more versions. In any case, the first
rule of a good craftsman is to use exclusively skins whose sale
is allowed, and which come
The leather is soaked in water
for 12 hours, then allowed to dry and rest, wrapped in paper,
and beaten with a hammer on stone. This renders the
leather resistant and pliable over time - attributes which are
indispensable for longevity and comfort.
The sewing thread used for the welt and the sole are made in
the shop using an ancient technique of
twisting linen thread with pitch and pure
beeswax. Very fi ne stitching awls bind the
shoes together with thousands of minuscule
stitches.
The little glue which is used is completely
vegetable-based. In fact, it is used by the pastrymaking
industry in the production of desserts.
